THE INSIDE OF THE STABLE
BY GEORGE MORLAND (1763-1804)
IN THE NATIONAL GALLERY, LONDON
Morland was typical of the age he lived in, when men lived hard, and, as his life showed, worked hard also. He died at a comparatively early age, and it is a remarkable testimony to his genius that during his comparatively brief career, punctuated as it was with violent excesses which might well have ruined all capacity for work, he contrived to turn out such a number of masterpieces and to make his mark in the world of art for all time. Even his excesses were turned to account, for upon one occasion, when a friend chided him for keeping very low company in a tavern, he asked how it would otherwise be possible to depict faithfully the scenes of rural life which he wished to paint.
Art was as natural to Morland as breathing. Even the youthful prococity of Millais pales before his early evidence of genius. He was but ten years of age when he exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time, and before he died thirty-nine of his paintings had been hung at its Exhibitions. Altogether he produced some hundreds of paintings and drawings, although he was always in financial difficulties and was often compelled to change his place of residence to escape his numerous creditors.
"The Inside of a Stable" is considered Morland's masterpiece. It was painted in 1791, and the scene is said to have been laid in the stable of the White Lion Inn at Paddington. One of its greatest charms is its naturalness, for although the various objects in the stable are apparently scattered carelessly, they fit perfectly into the composition, and each one, on examination, is seen to be in its proper place.
