From the time he was young had a compassion for people. After his father died he went to live with his aunt and uncle. They gave him his early religious training. When he went to college he left the faith for a while, but returned after making a trip with Isaac Milner. He entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament. For many years he worked to abolish the slave trade in England. After that was accomplished he continued to work for the freedom of those who were already enslaved. That bill was passed a few days before he died.
