What a wide variety of animals we see in this picture! In addition to several white sheep there is one black sheep in the herd. We also see a goat, a calf, a dog, and a Holstein cow. The cow seems to dominate the scene.
The cattle are quite out of control and the shepherd girl is trying to manage the flock with her voice and a switch. The collie is trying to help slow the herd.
It almost seems as if a hornet's nest has been unexpectedly disturbed, or maybe they have just spied the barn and are anxious to get home.
Observe the peculiar twist of the tails of the calf and cow. This indicates a state of excitement or anger.
